Guayusa — Ilex guayusa 1:2 Alcohol Tincture
The Night Watchman. The Dreaming Plant. Sacred morning medicine of the Kichwa people of the Ecuadorian Amazon.
Guayusa (pronounced gwhy-you-sa) is an evergreen holly tree native to the upper Amazon rainforest of Ecuador, Colombia and Peru. It is a cousin of Yerba Maté — both are Amazonian holly trees with stimulating properties — but Guayusa carries its own distinct character, its own mythology and its own deep ceremonial significance. It has been cultivated and worked with by Amazonian peoples for at least 1,500 years. A bundle of dried Guayusa leaves was discovered in a medicine man's tomb in the Bolivian Andes — far beyond the plant's natural range — indicating its ceremonial importance and the distances it was traded in ancient times.
It is known as the Night Watchman — a plant that keeps you awake, alert and dreaming simultaneously. And it is precisely this paradox that makes Guayusa so remarkable.
Sacred Tradition — The Morning Ceremony
The Kichwa and Shuar peoples of Ecuador have used Guayusa daily as part of a sacred morning ritual — gathering before dawn around a cauldron of brewing Guayusa to share stories, interpret dreams from the night before and receive guidance and strength for the day ahead.
The Kichwa believe that drinking Guayusa in the early morning provides protection and gives energy for a long day of work. The plant is also said to promote vivid dreaming, with elders interpreting these dreams to guide community decisions. Jesuit missionaries in the 17th and 18th centuries documented this daily practice among Amazonian peoples and noted its medicinal and stimulating properties.
The Kichwa attribute the holiness of Guayusa to a legend in which the tribe's people prayed for a plant that would help them dream. Those prayers were answered when a Kichwa twin saw a vision that led them to heaven's stairs, where they met their ancestors who introduced them to a plant that would allow their people to enter the world of dreams and attain enlightenment.
During Guayusa ceremonies, large amounts are consumed and those who partake are meant to talk about their dreams to see if they can unveil anything about the past, present or future. Some men from the Ashuar tribe reported that Guayusa induces hunting dreams. Hunters also drink Guayusa before nighttime hunting trips to heighten their senses and sharpen their awareness and focus.
The Plant & Its Properties
Guayusa contains a unique combination of compounds that work together in a way no single stimulant can replicate — caffeine for alertness and sustained energy, theobromine (the same feel-good compound found in cacao) for mood and warmth, and L-theanine for calm focus without the jitteriness associated with coffee or strong caffeine. The result is a clean, sustained energy — alert but grounded, focused but relaxed.
It is also exceptionally rich in antioxidants — containing twice the antioxidant content of green tea — including chlorogenic acids, catechins, flavonoids and ferulic acid, which supports healthy circulation. It contains 15 essential amino acids and has been studied for its anti-inflammatory, antimicrobial, analgesic and anti-diabetic properties.
In combination with other plants it has been used by the Kichwa to treat colds and flu, stomach complaints, body aches and as an oral health tonic. It is given to hunting animals in small doses to sharpen their alertness before a hunt — a testament to how profoundly the plant is understood to work on the nervous system and senses.
About This Tincture
Our Guayusa is prepared as a 1:2 alcohol tincture — one part leaf material to two parts organic alcohol — preserving the full spectrum of Guayusa's active compounds in a concentrated, potent preparation. Alcohol extraction draws out the widest range of active compounds and delivers maximum potency with the longest shelf life of any preparation method.
Most tinctures on the market are made at a 1:5 ratio — one part plant to five parts liquid. Ours are 1:2 as standard — significantly more plant per drop and noticeably stronger. Sourced from Kichwa cultivated leaf, prepared in small batches by hand with care and respect for the plant and the tradition it comes from.
How to Use
5 drops under the tongue or added to water, taken in the morning or before any period of focused work, meditation, ceremony or creative practice. Hold briefly before swallowing. Can be taken daily.
Guayusa works particularly well as a morning medicine — taken before dawn or at the start of the day, in the spirit of the traditional Kichwa ceremony. Sit quietly with it for a few minutes before the day begins. Notice what you remember from your dreams. Let the plant do what it has always done — prepare you, clarify you, and carry you into the day with energy and intention.
