Motelo Sanango — Abuta grandifolia 1:2 Alcohol Tincture
A revered Amazonian climbing vine — known for its broad healing properties and its steady, grounding spirit.
Motelo Sanango is a robust climbing vine native to the lush rainforests of South America, recognised by its extensive root system and rich profile of alkaloids, flavonoids and saponins. It is one of the plants recommended in Amazonian tradition for initiatory dieta — the first sustained engagement with a master plant teacher — valued for its broad range of physical and emotional benefits and its accessible, steady spirit energy.
The name Motelo means tortoise in Quechua — and the spirit of this plant reflects that. Unhurried, grounded, persistent and wise. It works deeply and steadily, in its own time, in its own way.
Traditional Uses
Motelo Sanango has been used by indigenous Amazonian communities for centuries across a remarkably wide range of physical and spiritual applications.
Women's health — one of Motelo Sanango's most well-documented traditional uses is in the support of female reproductive health. Decoctions of stems and roots mixed with wild honey have been traditionally used to support fertility. Root decoctions have been used for post-menstrual haemorrhage, menstrual irregularities, cramps and hormonal balance. It is also traditionally associated with supporting difficult deliveries and reproductive wellness more broadly.
Anti-inflammatory and musculoskeletal support — alcoholic maceration of the root has long been used for rheumatism, arthritis and muscle pain. Amazonian plant shamans traditionally prescribe it for those who spend long periods in water — fishermen and loggers — due to its warming, anti-inflammatory properties that counteract the cold and damp conditions associated with joint and muscle complaints.
Cardiovascular and blood support — root decoction is used as a cardiotonic and antianemic, reflecting a traditional understanding of the plant's supportive effect on the blood and circulation.
Additional traditional applications — the Wayapi people use bark and stem decoctions as a dental analgesic. The Ecuadorian Kichwa use leaf decoctions for fever, conjunctivitis and snakebite. The plant has also been used historically for anemia, ulcers, malaria, typhoid and as a natural aphrodisiac — macerated leaves, bark and roots mixed with rum were traditionally used by Creole communities for this purpose.
Mental clarity and focus — Motelo Sanango is also recognised in tradition for promoting mental clarity, improving focus and increasing alertness. It has been integrated into spiritual practices and meditation as a plant that sharpens the mind and deepens concentration.
The Spirit of Motelo Sanango
Motelo Sanango is regarded as a sacred master plant carrying the energy of resilience, endurance and steady transformation. Its spirit does not rush. Like the tortoise it is named for, it works at depth and over time — building, strengthening and grounding the person who works with it.
It is listed among the plants recommended for initiatory dieta at respected Amazonian healing centres — a plant that is considered approachable for those new to this tradition while still carrying its own unique and distinctive medicine and healer-teacher spirit qualities that are progressively revealed over the course of sustained work.
The spirit of Motelo Sanango offers a protective and anchoring presence — creating a sense of safety and groundedness that makes it easier to navigate challenging inner terrain, release emotional burdens and step into a more authentic and empowered sense of self.
About This Tincture
Our Motelo Sanango is prepared as a 1:2 alcohol tincture — one part plant material to two parts organic alcohol. The root is the primary part of the plant used in traditional Amazonian medicine and carries the strongest concentration of the plant's bioactive compounds.
Most tinctures on the market are made at a 1:5 ratio — one part plant to five parts liquid. Ours are 1:2 as standard — significantly more plant per drop and noticeably stronger. Sourced directly from trusted indigenous partners in the Amazon, prepared in small batches by hand with care and respect for the plant and the tradition it comes from.
How to Use
5 drops under the tongue or in a small amount of water, once or twice daily, away from food and drink. For best results use consistently over a minimum of 21 days. Motelo Sanango rewards sustained and intentional use — its effects build gradually and deepen with time and consistency.
Can be integrated into meditation, journalling or reflective practices to deepen your connection with the plant.
Important
