Tanti Rao (Mimosa pudica)
1:2 Alcohol Tincture
The Plant of Tranquility. The Sensitive One. A master plant of self-love, emotional healing and inner peace.
Known throughout the Amazon as Tanti Rao, this remarkable plant is recognised by its unique ability to fold and close its leaves when touched. Known botanically as Mimosa pudica and often called the Sensitive Plant, Sleeping Grass or Touch-Me-Not, its extraordinary responsiveness mirrors the deeper teachings carried within its medicine.
In the Shipibo tradition, Rao means medicine and Tanti means tranquility. Tanti Rao teaches us about sensitivity — not as weakness, but as a gift. Just as the plant responds to the slightest touch, its medicine encourages us to reconnect with the subtle aspects of ourselves that are often buried beneath stress, fear, trauma, anxiety and the demands of modern life.
Gentle yet profound, Tanti Rao is regarded as a plant that helps restore peace to the heart, calm to the mind and softness to the spirit.
The Spirit of Tanti Rao
Tanti Rao is often worked with as a medicine of emotional healing and self-discovery. Amazonian healers describe its energy as nurturing, heart-opening and deeply calming. It is a plant that teaches us to listen — to our feelings, our intuition and our deeper needs.
Many emotional wounds originate from experiences that caused us to close ourselves off from love, trust and vulnerability. Over time this can manifest as anxiety, fear, emotional numbness, self-criticism or a feeling of disconnection from ourselves and others.
The spirit of Tanti Rao gently encourages these protective walls to soften. It is traditionally used to support the cultivation of self-love, compassion and emotional balance, helping us reconnect with the natural openness of the heart.
Rather than forcing change, Tanti Rao works through tranquility, patience and sensitivity, allowing healing to unfold naturally and at its own pace.
Traditional Uses
Within Amazonian healing traditions, Tanti Rao is valued for its calming influence on the nervous system and emotional body. It is commonly worked with during periods of stress, overwhelm, grief, anxiety and emotional exhaustion.
Traditionally it is used to support:
Emotional healing and trauma integration
Nervous system regulation
Stress and anxiety support
Inner peace and tranquility
Self-love and self-acceptance
Heart-centred awareness
Spiritual connection and intuition
Meditation and contemplative practices
Many who work with Tanti Rao describe a feeling of greater emotional spaciousness, increased sensitivity to their inner world and a renewed capacity for compassion towards themselves and others.
Tanti Rao in the Dieta Tradition
Tanti Rao is a respected plant teacher within the Amazonian dieta tradition. During dieta, the plant is worked with under specific dietary and lifestyle restrictions designed to deepen one's connection with the spirit and teachings of the plant.
Dieters often seek Tanti Rao when working through emotional wounds, unresolved trauma, anxiety or periods of significant personal transformation. The plant is considered particularly supportive for those wishing to cultivate greater self-awareness, emotional resilience and a more loving relationship with themselves.
Its lessons are often described as subtle yet profound, revealing deeper layers of emotional healing through stillness, reflection and inner sensitivity.
About This Tincture
Our Tanti Rao tincture is prepared at a potent 1:2 ratio using sustainably sourced plant material and organic alcohol.
Most tinctures available today are produced at a 1:5 ratio — one part herb to five parts liquid. Our tinctures are made at a much stronger 1:2 ratio, providing significantly more plant material per drop.
Prepared in small batches with care and respect for both the plant and the traditions from which it originates.
How to Use
5 drops under the tongue twice daily, away from food and drink. Hold briefly before swallowing.
Tanti Rao is often best approached with patience and consistency. Many people find its effects deepen gradually over time, particularly when combined with meditation, journaling, breathwork or other reflective practices.
