Remo Caspi — Aspidosperma excelsum Powdered Bark

The Oar Tree. A powerful Amazonian master plant of energetic clearing, grounding and inner strength — in its raw traditional form.

Remo Caspi is a towering hardwood tree of the Amazon rainforest, growing up to one hundred feet in height. Its name translates from Quechua as the oar tree — named for its large buttressed roots at the base of the trunk, ideal for carving into paddles. This wood is remarkable for being both extremely hard and durable and yet capable of floating — a quality that speaks to the character of its medicine. Strength that does not sink. Groundedness that does not become rigid.

The grooves and ridges formed by its root buttresses run the full length of the trunk, giving Remo Caspi a distinctive appearance in the forest. It is a tree of presence — you notice it. Indigenous shamans have worked with it for generations as a sacred master plant teacher, sometimes added as an admixture to Ayahuasca brews and frequently dieted in its own right.

This listing is for powdered bark — the raw plant material, for those who wish to prepare their own tea or decoction, or work with Remo Caspi in its most traditional form.

Traditional Uses

Remo Caspi is used by indigenous shamans primarily for its spiritual and energetic properties — moving and removing dense, dark or stagnant energies from the body and the surrounding field, providing clarity and guidance, and creating a deep sense of grounding and centering. It is said to have a balancing effect on masculine and feminine energies, bringing the two into alignment and restoring a sense of inner coherence.

The plant is known for bringing vivid dreams that connect the dreamer to ancestors, past lives and past situations that required healing but remained unresolved. Users commonly describe finding clarity about difficult decisions and situations during their work with Remo Caspi — a sense of being strengthened from within and becoming less reactive to external pressures.

On the physical level, Remo Caspi's main active constituents are indole alkaloids — the aspidosperma alkaloids — several of which are documented for their antimalarial actions, explaining the plant's widespread traditional use for malaria and malarial fevers across Amazonian communities. Its traditional use for high blood pressure and as an aphrodisiac is attributed to yohimbine alkaloids found in the bark, which have vasodilating properties and a well-documented effect on circulation and vitality.

The Kichwa tribe use the resin from Remo Caspi plants to treat cold sores and herpes. It has also been used traditionally for bronchitis, antiseptic purposes and for supporting testosterone levels and hormone production.

The Spirit of Remo Caspi

Shamans of the Amazon describe Remo Caspi as a plant that works to move and remove dense and dark energies — clearing what has accumulated in the body and energy field and restoring clarity and guidance in its place. Its spirit is grounding, strengthening and deeply centring.

Those who have worked with Remo Caspi consistently describe building confidence, courage and emotional steadiness over time. It is a plant associated with helping people make difficult decisions — not by making the decision for them, but by cutting through the noise, reducing reactivity and bringing the person back to their own centre where clarity naturally arises.

Remo Caspi can be added to Ayahuasca brews or worked with independently through dieta. It is regarded as one of the master plants of the palero tradition — the branch of Amazonian shamanism that works specifically with tree medicines as primary teachers and healers.

How to Prepare

As a tea or decoction: Add one teaspoon of powdered bark to 500ml of water. Simmer gently over a low heat for 30 - 60 minutes. Strain and drink s. A gentle simmer preserves the plant's properties far better than a rolling boil. Drink once or twice daily, ideally away from food.

For a dieta: A recommended cycle of 21 days of daily use alongside a purifying diet of body, mind and spirit allows the medicine to work cumulatively and at depth. The dieta associated with Remo Caspi follows the traditional Amazonian protocol — simple clean food, no salt, sugar, spices or alcohol, reduced stimulants and time spent in quiet and reflection. Read our full guide to master plant dieta on the website for more detail.

Remo Caspi rewards consistent, intentional use over time. Its effects are cumulative — building steadily with regular use rather than arriving in a single session. It can be integrated into meditation, journalling and reflective practices to deepen your connection with the plant's spirit.

Storage: Keep in an airtight container away from direct sunlight, heat and moisture. A cool dark cupboard is ideal. Trust your senses — if the aroma has faded significantly, the medicine has too.
