Sinicuichi — Heimia salicifolia 1:2 Alcohol Tincture
Tonatiuh yxiuh. The Herb of the Sun. Sacred solar medicine of the Aztecs.
Sinicuichi is a slender flowering shrub native to Mexico, Central America and parts of South America, growing along riverbanks and in moist, sun-drenched places. It is known to the Aztecs as tonatiuh yxiuh — the Herb of the Sun — and across Mexico and South America as abre-o-sol, the Sun Opener. These names are not metaphor. This is a plant with a deep, ancient and well-documented relationship to solar energy, memory, joy and the expansion of perception.
It was used in ancient Mesoamerican ritual and ceremony to access distant memories and spiritual visions, and is still worked with today by Mexican and South American shamans and herbalists for its unique ability to soften the mind, elevate mood and open inner landscapes that ordinary waking consciousness keeps closed.
Traditional Use & Preparation
The most traditional preparation of Sinicuichi is as a fermented sun tea — the leaves are bruised, placed in water and left in full sunlight to ferment over several days. This solar infusion was understood by the Aztecs as a literal charging of the plant with solar energy — the sun drawn down into the liquid through the leaves. The resulting drink has a mild, slightly fermented quality and was used in ritual contexts to access memory, promote vivid dreaming and bring about a state of relaxed, radiant clarity.
Our tincture honours that heritage — capturing the full spectrum of the plant's properties through careful alcohol extraction with deep respect for the tradition.
The Spirit & Effects
Sinicuichi carries a deep connection to solar energy — to warmth, light, confidence and the expansion of personal power. It is associated with the solar plexus — the energy centre of personal authority, self-worth and life force — and is worked with to dissolve blockages in this centre, restoring clarity, confidence and the sense of one's own inner light.
Its effects are gentle, warm and distinctive. Most people describe a mild euphoric calm — a giddy sense of tranquility, a softening of tension, and a pleasant elevation of mood that feels genuinely sunny in quality. Sounds may become more vivid and perceptually interesting. A deep relaxation of both body and mind follows, often accompanied by a dreamy, reflective inner state that lends itself to memory, insight and the exploration of distant or deeply held experiences.
Sinicuichi is said to expand access to memory — including very early memories, ancestral experiences and even what some describe as prenatal or past-life impressions. Whether understood literally or metaphorically, there is something in this plant that opens doors within the mind that are ordinarily closed. It is a plant of inner archaeology — gentle, warm and illuminating.
Plant Chemistry
Sinicuichi contains several unique alkaloids, the most prominent of which is vertine (also known as cryogenine). Research into this compound suggests it contributes to the plant's sedative, tranquilising, muscle-relaxing and antispasmodic properties — providing a physiological basis for the deep muscular and nervous system relaxation that users experience. The full alkaloid profile of Sinicuichi is not yet completely understood, which is consistent with a plant that has been worked with experientially for thousands of years and is only now beginning to receive serious scientific attention.
About This Tincture
Our Sinicuichi is prepared as a 1:2 alcohol tincture — one part sustainably sourced Sinicuichi leaf and stem material to two parts organic alcohol. Prepared in small batches by hand with care and respect for the plant's traditional lineage.
Most tinctures on the market are made at a 1:5 ratio — one part plant to five parts liquid. Ours are 1:2 as standard — significantly more plant per drop and noticeably stronger.
How to Use
5 drops under the tongue or in a small amount of water. Begin with a small amount and observe your sensitivity. Sinicuichi is best worked with in a quiet, relaxed setting — it is not a plant for busy, demanding moments. Give yourself time to simply be with its effects.
Works well in the evening, before meditation, dreamwork or any reflective practice. Keep a notebook nearby — Sinicuichi has a way of surfacing memories and insights that are worth capturing.
