Uchu Sanango — Tabernaemontana sanango
The Grandfather of the Sanango medicines. A plant of fire, integrity and deep nervous system healing.
In the Amazon, the word Sanango is reserved for plants of exceptional healing power. There are several — each with its own character and medicine — but Uchu Sanango stands above them. It is regarded as the head of all the Sanango plants, the elder of the group. Its spirit is described as Grandfather energy — wise, grounding, uncompromising and deeply protective. This is not a gentle plant. It is a serious teacher that works at depth.
Traditional Uses
Uchu Sanango is made from the inner root bark — fiery and spicy in quality, said to "raise both physical and spiritual heat" and penetrate deeply into the nervous system and musculoskeletal structure. In traditional Amazonian medicine it is worked with for nervous system damage, physical tension held chronically in the body, poor circulation, joint and muscle complaints, and conditions affecting the eyes and vision.
On the energetic and spiritual level, Uchu Sanango is one of the most powerful plants used for breaking old patterns. Where a person has been repeating destructive cycles — in relationships, in thought, in behaviour — this plant cuts through. It is associated with the restoration of integrity, the courage to face truth and the ability to return to one's own authentic path after having wandered from it.
Shamans work with Uchu Sanango during times of deep transformation. It clears stagnant energy from the system, sharpens both physical and spiritual vision, strengthens memory and opens pathways for new perspectives to take root. It is considered a guardian and a guide — one that does not comfort you so much as it strengthens you.
The Spirit of Uchu Sanango
The Grandfather Spirit of Uchu Sanango is one of the most revered presences in Amazonian plant medicine. He is protective, grounding and wise in the way that only great age and deep experience can produce. He does not indulge weakness — he illuminates it, so that it can be released. Those who have dieted deeply with this plant describe a profound recalibration — as though everything out of alignment in the person is brought gently but firmly back into order.
He is called upon in times of serious challenge, when a person needs not comfort but clarity. When the path ahead requires courage, truth and the willingness to let go of what no longer serves — Uchu Sanango is the ally for that work.
About This Tincture
Our Uchu Sanango is prepared as a 1:2 tincture — one part inner root bark to two parts organic alcohol. The root bark is the most potent part of the plant and the part traditionally used by Amazonian healers. Alcohol extraction preserves the full spectrum of active compounds, delivering maximum potency and the longest shelf life of any preparation method.
Most tinctures on the market are made at a 1:5 ratio. Ours are 1:2 as standard — significantly more plant per drop and noticeably stronger. Prepared in small batches by hand with care and respect for the plant and the tradition it comes from.
How to Use
5 drops under the tongue twice daily, away from food and drink. Hold briefly before swallowing. Uchu Sanango is a plant that rewards consistent, intentional work over time — its effects deepen over weeks rather than arriving in a single session. Approaching it with clear intention and a willingness to face what it shows you will determine the depth of the experience.
It works well alongside meditation, journalling and any practice that supports reflection and honest self-inquiry.
